| Dear Editor, It was with dismay and frustration that I read the Sept. 20, 2011 Maple Creek News regarding change of hospital plans. It seemed too good to be true that we could have a pioneer model for others to follow, without control and interference from Cypress Health Region and the Ministry of Health. The removal of a laundry facility from here with transport of contaminated laundry to Regina is unimaginable. Even if such a plan were cost effective, the idea is repugnant. There has to be a common sense and environmental consideration here. To transport soiled laundry would mean a specific vehicle, with a maintenance program, a driver, mileage costs, further use of fossil fuels and employment of a Regina resident. Swift Current hospital is under this plan, and it isn’t all that efficient from stories that have been told. Laundry pickup and returns are not on time in bad weather, laundry has been returned that was still damp and the list of complaints goes on. I suspect that the director of Health System Quality and Efficiency, Trish Livingstone will have a difficult time proving the efficiency of central laundry being the correct direction for this particular community. Our weather in this corner of the province can be unpredictable in the winter season. The possibility of running out of clean laundry and worse yet, storage of soiled, contaminated laundry makes one cringe. Why can’t the cost of a laundry facility be paid out in Maple Creek, rather than in the city of Regina? I suspect the next grand saving will be disposable plastic dishes and cutlery, never mind the environmental impact! I am pleased to see our Steering Committee is showing strong objection to the idea of transporting our laundry out. I suspect that the rest of the community shares these sentiments and may we win this concession! Bureaucratic interference is not to be tolerated. A concerned and interested citizen, Elaine Isabelle Maple Creek |
