Dear Editor,
January 3, 2012….I will spare you the gory details of my unfortunate accident, because I want to focus on a group of heroes that rallied to my rescue that day.
The accident happened at about 4 p.m. that afternoon and after a quick call to the Maple Creek Hospital, Scott, my husband, and I were soon on our way by truck and arrived at the hospital just before 5 p.m. with a team of health-care professionals waiting for us.  (Thank you Scott for keeping the truck between the ditches as you sped me to Maple Creek while listening to my groans of agony!)
It wasn't long before the morphine began to ease the pain and the health team assessed the damage I had done to my finger. I severed the tip of my left hand's pointer finger just above the first knuckle and the decision was made to sew it back on. X-rays, tetanus shot, IV with antibiotics, freezing, stitching, sterile bandaging and more X-rays all went by in a blur of about two hours. The smiles of encouragement, hugs and prayers were especially appreciated.
It's been a number of days since my accident and I've had to go back to the hospital to get clean dressings for the wound on a regular basis. I cannot believe how well I feel and how quickly I am healing. I know it’s going to take time for my finger to recover and work “normally” again, but I know that it will heal well because of the staff's immediate and proper response to my medical emergency.
There are three very important things I received from our professional medical staff in Maple Creek – compassion, respect and world-class medical care.
Thank you Doctor Jo, Marianne, Melinda, Tianna, Dan, LaVonne, Dawn and all the staff who work so hard to ease our pain in times of trouble at the Maple Creek Hospital!

Budget cuts have eliminated community volunteers from both the Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge and Katimavik program. Do you intend to put in the extra time to help out your community?
