On Monday (Oct. 29) at approximately 8:10 p.m, members from the Swift Current RCMP detachment were alerted to a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on Highway 1 near Tompkins.

The vehicle was reportedly travelling Westbound in the Eastbound lanes.

While on route to the scene, another call came in reporting a head-on collision five kilometres East of Tompkins involving two vehicles.

When Mounties arrived, they found two vehicles had collided and had come to a stop in the driving lanes of the highway. Witnesses were at the scene attempting to assist with the injured.

The 66-year-old male driver from Gull Lake, who was the lone occupant of the Westbound vehicle travelling in the wrong lane, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The other vehicle was carrying three occupants. A 27-year-old female driver and a 62-year-old female passenger, both from Shaunavon, were also pronounced deceased.

The lone survivor of the accident was an infant boy who was travelling with the two women. He was removed from the back seat of the vehicle and sent to the Swift Current Hospital via ambulance. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The three occupants from Shaunavon were all from the same family.

Following the accident, the road was closed for several hours with assistance from the Department of Highways while two Traffic Reconstructionists analyzed the scene. The highway was then re-opened early Tuesday morning.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor at this time pending toxicology results.

The investigation remains ongoing with assistance from the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.
