Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter in response to a letter to the editor (“Health care services are deplorable”) in the Jan. 21, 2010 edition of the Maple Creek News-Times, as well as similar yet different versions of the same letter in other area newspapers.
I am a registered nurse and am in the position of nursing unit co-ordinator here at Cypress Lodge. I work together with other nursing, special care aide, kitchen, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and activities staff in providing long-term care services to 48 residents whose home is the Cypress Lodge. These staff are trained, knowledgeable and qualified health care providers, who are truly dedicated to offering a high level of quality care to each and every resident who lives with us. In the time that we spend with the residents, we become very close to them and they to us.
After reading the letter to the editor, the staff at Cypress Lodge were not only saddened, but felt like they had been kicked in the stomach. The letter spoke of specific accusations that the sister was having to endure, of which our staff are extremely upset about as they are being accused of ignoring her sister when she needed care and comfort in her final days. They are concerned that other families or the public will question whether Cypress Lodge is the best place for their loved ones to live, or if these types of accusations are the norm around here.
The staff are very proud of their abilities, skills and caring attitudes that they offer to the Lodge’s residents and families 24 hours a day, every day of the year. They receive many thank you cards as well as appreciations in newspaper from family members. Here are just a few phrases used to describe the staff: “dedicated,” “compassionate”, “thoughtful,” “caring,” “took the time for us and dad,” “extraordinary,” and many more too numerous to mention.
I am proud to work with the staff at Cypress Lodge and I am proud of the care that we provide to the residents who live here with us. If there are concerns or issues with the care that is being provided, I welcome and encourage you to come and see me. As always, our staff and I want to make sure that families are confident in the care that we provide for their loved one.
On  behalf of the Cypress Lodge staff, I don’t feel that health care services in our facility are ‘deplorable’ or ‘eroded’.

Do you think the Cypress Health Region made the right decision in closing the hospital without doing any tests?
