Dear Editor, Having spent approximately 75 years of my life in Maple Creek, at which time I was active in many of the community organizations, including town council, hospital board, etc., I find I am still interested in the events taking place in the old “home town.” I have followed the “News” items about the problems being experienced in regards to health care and I must congratulate Julie Opsal (Maple Creek News issue of Jan. 26) and Margaret J. Brewitt (issue of Jan. 28) for taking pen in hand and expressing an opinion about the situation being experienced by the community in so far as health care is concerned. I was a member of the Board of Directors for the Maple Creek Union Hospital for about 13 years, many of those years as vice-chairman and chairman of the board. I was also a member of the first “District Board” after it was established by Health Minister Louis Simard and Deputy Minister Duane Adams. While on the Board of Directors of the Maple Creek Union Hospital, which was composed of appointees from the 13 (if my memory serves me correctly) participating municipalities, we were fortunate in having a good group of doctors, a director of nursing, a good complement of nurses and nurses’ aids, as well as maintenance staff, etc, etc., and I believe the health problems of the citizens for the area were taken care of quite satisfactorily. My congratulations to the municipalities that are pushing for better health care for the district, the committee(s) that are pushing the issues, the Hutterite colonies that are offering their support, and yes, the citizens of the district who are taking an interest in the matter. Hopefully your efforts will be successful and Maple Creek and district will again have the health care the citizens were accustomed to receiving, which could even extend to the residents of southeastern Alberta. Unfortunately age and failing health dictated that we move to Medicine Hat a few years ago, but our interest in the people of Maple Creek and district remain. Jack Migowsky Medicine Hat, Alta. |
