By Marcia Love The Salvation Army and Maple Creek Anglican Church are hoping to help the people of Haiti through a charity auction Feb. 10. “Right now we’re looking for people to donate any new or quality used items to the auction,” said Georgina Kimber, who is involved in planning the event. “We’re hoping people will donate and come out and support us.” The auction will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall from 6 to 9 p.m., but monetary and auction donations are preferred before the day of the event. “The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has agreed to match any monetary donations made up to the day of the auction,” Kimber said. “So we would like to have as many people donate before that as possible.” Kimber said she believes it is important for Canadians to support the Haiti relief effort, because the people of Haiti have lost so much. “I thought we had to do something, because we’re so fortunate here,” she said. “We have food, water, shelter and clothes on our backs, but these people don’t have any of that anymore. They’re so resilient. They’ve lost so much, yet they keep going.” There are Haiti relief donation tins located at financial institutions and businesses throughout Maple Creek where monetary donations may be made. With donations exceeding $60 million across Canada, CIDA has surpassed their original goal of $50 million for Haiti relief efforts. Anyone wishing to volunteer or make a cash or auction donation to the Haiti relief auction may contact Georgina Kimber at 662-2973 or The Salvation Army at 662-3871. |
