By Marcia Love Cypress Hills Vineyard and Winery has been recognized as a tourism hot-spot, as it was nominated as a finalist for a Saskatchewan Tourism Award of Excellence on March 2. The winery was chosen by the Southwest Tourism Association to be a contender in the Business of the Year Under 50 Full-time Employees section, where it competes against the Barr Colony Heritage Cultural Centre in Lloydminster and the Kahkewistahaw Gas and Convenience Store in Yorkton. Marty and Marie Bohnet, owners of Cypress Hills Vineyard and Winery, are quite happy to have the honour of being nominated. “It’s nice to be nominated, but I think on behalf of our staff it would be lovely to win it,” Marie said, who had 24 full- and part-time employees working at the winery last summer. The qualifications for nominees of the Business of the Year award included the promotion of tourism in an area, which Marie said Cypress Hills Vineyard and Winery has worked hard at. “We’ve been involved in a lot of tourism organizations and in helping raise awareness in Cypress Hills,” she explained. In 2008, Cypress Hills Vineyard and Winery was the recipient of Tourism Saskatchewan’s Rookie of the Year Award following its opening in June 2007. Marie said she was surprised to have the business nominated, as they are only going into their fourth year of operation. “I just sort of assumed that we’re still a new business,” she said. “It’s all gone by very quickly, but I certainly still feel the growing pains.” Marie attributes some of the company’s success to the advertising they have received through Saskatchewan Tourism. “We’ve had a lot of publicity that way, and we’ve grown a lot in the past three years,” she noted. The winery received 19,000 visitors last summer, and Marie expects the numbers to continue to increase. “We try and show everybody a good time,” she said. “We try and create the best afternoon of their summer.” |
