By Marcia Love Investigations are being conducted into the events and actions surrounding the asbestos discovery which prompted the closure of Maple Creek Hospital on Feb. 25. Bryce Martin, director of communications for Cypress Health Region, said employees have been suspended while the investigations continue, but would not comment as to how many or how long the suspensions will last. The occupational health and safety (OH & S) committee is conducting an investigation to determine if appropriate actions were taken in regards to the incident, and to ensure the same situation does not occur in the future. A second investigation is being co-ordinated through the Cypress Health Region Human Resources Department, which is looking into the issues of the suspensions pending the OH & S investigation. “(The human resources’) investigation is taking a peek at the documentation that’s involved in the situation and talking to staff,” Martin said. “Once they have the information they need, then the determination will be made whether or not the suspensions were warranted, and whether there’s a corrective action that is necessary.” One of the responsibilities of the OH & S committee is that it completes regular inspections of the hospital facility. “By legislation, these committees are to meet at least once quarterly,” Martin said. “Their major responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of the staff within that building, and to make sure it is a safe building.” Martin said the health region will not know whether or not there will be any charges in relation to the asbestos incident until the investigations are completed. |
