WHITE - Hazel Veronica White of Eastend, Sask. passed away Feb. 6, 2010 at the age of 95. Predeceased by her parents Delbert and Margaret Garrett, sister Lila Swanson, husband Billy (W.F.), daughter Judy and grandson Robbie White. She is survived by her four children; daughter Gail (Howard) Bock of Eastend, three sons Raymond (Linda) of Eastend, David (Laura) of Maple Creek and Donny (Al) of Medicine Hat; seven grandchildren Judy Wasko, Terry White, Tannis (Kelly) Topham, Brett (Carla) Bock, Kenneth (Tammie) Bock, Aaron (Jana) White and Sara White; 16 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild as well as one sister Babara (Jim) Martens of Lethbridge, Marlene White, brother-in-law Doug (Lorraine) White of Calgary and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Hazel was born Oct. 31, 1914 on the homestead near Dunkirk, Sask., the oldest daughter of Delbert and Margaret Garrett. She attended Garrett School and later Our Lady of Sion Convent and Normal School in Moose Jaw, Sask. She taught at Bevitt School south of Moose Jaw, Bill Good’s (later North Cypress School) south of Walsh, Alta. and at Cypress Hills School south of Maple Creek. It was here she met and married Billy (W.F.) White, oldest son of Bill (W.J.) and Elsie White on Jan. 11, 1941 in St. Patrick’s Church in Medicine Hat. They lived on the White Ranch until 1944, when they moved northwest of Eastend renting the Willis Ranch until 1946 when they purchased the adjacent Kokott/Cross Ranch from Tom Kokott. Here they raised their family, enjoyed their nearby neighbours and friends and involved themselves in a number of community activities and organizations. Unfortunately in 1964 Hazel suffered an illness that left her confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life. However, Hazel’s strong will, incredible determination and deep faith, gave her the strength to overcome the many challenges that came her way. She never complained and never allowed her disability to affect living life to the fullest. In 1972 Hazel and Billy purchased the Cheeseman Ranch from Billy’s uncle, George Naismith and returned to Maple Creek where they continued to ranch until 1984 when they retired to town due to Billy’s failing health. Following Billy’s death in 1988, Hazel moved into Sunglo Court where she lived until 2003 when, due to failing health, she moved to the Wolf Willow Health Centre in Eastend. Hazel’s keen mind, quick wit and strong personality will be missed by her many friends and family. The funeral service was held on Fri., Feb. 12, 2010 at 2 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Eastend. A private interment to follow at a later date in the family plot in Maple Creek. Those who wish to remember Hazel with a gift may give to Wolf Willow Health Centre of Eastend or to the new hospital building fund in Maple Creek.
