By Marcia Love Fox Valley native Ryan Deis’ curling team played tough matches at the Men’s Tankard Provincial Curling Championship in Lumsden Feb. 10-14, where they suffered three losses. “We struggled at the Provincials,” Deis admitted, as his team, the Engel rink came out 0-3. The team lost 9-3 to the Carl deConnick Smith rink of Rosetown in their first game. Later, the team lost 6-4 to Dallan Muyres’ rink of Humboldt after playing an extra end, and lost 8-2 to the Ian Mayoh rink from Debden. Deis, who currently lives at Lloydminster, but plays third for the team out of the Fox Valley Curling Club, said despite the loss it was a good experience with a large crowd. “The ice at provincials was a little different, as it often changes from draw to draw,” he said. “There was less curl on the ice than what we were accustomed to, but for the most part it was pretty consistent.” Although Deis previously made it to the Provincials in 2008, this was the Engel rink’s first time travelling to the Men’s Tankard as a team. Members of the Engel rink include skip Darren Engel, second Jason Barnhart and lead Drew Wilby, all of Regina. The Darrell McKee rink of Saskatoon came out on top at the tournament and will advance to the Brier in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where they will represent Saskatchewan. |
