By Marcia Love The team won the Canada West title at Vancouver Mar. 6 for the first time in the history of Huskies athletics. The team defeated the number-one ranked University of B.C. Thunderbirds 104-87. They then went on to beat the University of Calgary Dinos, who were ranked number two, in a 96-83 win. Clint Unsworth, who is in his fifth year with the Huskies, said the team has worked hard to make it as far as it has. “We’ve certainly got a lot of good all-star players on the team,” Clint noted. “Based on the team we have, I think we have a very good chance (in the Nationals).” The Huskies starting post player has won more games with the Huskies than any other player, with 107 wins. The team has also seen the most wins in the history of the Huskies, with a regular season record of 14-6. Chris Unsworth, who is playing his first year with the Huskies after transferring from the University of Calgary last fall, said he is glad to be moving on to the Nationals for the first time. “We were the lowest-ranked team going into the Canada West, but we considered ourselves to be the best team there,” he explained. “We played our best and we’ve proved ourselves.” Chris said it’s also neat to be making it to Nationals with his brother as a teammate. This is Clint’s second time making it to Nationals, and he is excited for the experience this year. “We’ve had lots of preparation,” he said. “Going back to the Nationals and also winning Canada West is pretty good. All the hard work has finally paid off.” The Huskies advance along with the University of Calgary Dinos to Ottawa, where they will face-off against five other teams from Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Quebec, as well as one wildcard team yet to be determined, during the Nationals March 19 to 21.
