By Marcia Love Two local curlers will have the chance to practice with some of the world’s best female players during the Women’s World Curling Championship in Swift Current. Landon Bertram of Piapot and Shaelyn Wenzel of Maple Creek were chosen as junior stars for the curling championship and will be playing with curling teams during their practices on March 21. Twelve countries will be competing in the tournament from March 20 to 28. Wenzel, who has been curling competitively since she was five years old, will be curling during Team U.S.A.’s practice. “I’ll be warming up with the team, sitting with the coaches during the game and then playing while the team cools down after the game,” she said. Sixteen-year-old Wenzel is most excited to meet the teams and curl in an actual championship arena setting. “It’ll be totally different from any other arena setting, because there’s going to be so many people watching,” Wenzel noted, who plays for Maple Creek Composite High School’s senior girls’ curling team. Fifteen-year-old Bertram, who will be curling with Team Latvia, is glad to have this opportunity. “I’m excited to meet the teams from other countries, because you get to see them on TV and it’ll be really cool to see them in person,” he said. A curler since the age of nine, Bertram plays with Maple Creek Composite High School’s junior boys’ curling team. “We’ll get to meet the TSN broadcast crew and even carry the flag in during the opening ceremonies,” Bertram said. The Women’s World Curling Championship will have both a boy and girl curler from the Chinook School Division practicing with each team during the tournament. |
