Maple Creek Mom hoping to raise $5000 for Childhood Cancer

BY KATE WINQUIST

No one ever wants to hear the words, “Your child has cancer.”

Those words were a reality for Maple Creek’s Kodie Francis. In May 2014, Kodie’s son William was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.). At only four years and ten months old, William was treated for 38 months with chemotherapy that they have used for decades on adults.

At eight years old, William has recently had his six months off chemo appointment in January. With less travel and better health of William, Francis has decided it is time to give back by helping raise funds, shave her hair and say thank you.

“I wanted to celebrate with our community for William because they have come together awesomely, and still do – when he was diagnosed, our travel and everything. I wanted to give something back to them, a fun evening, a kind of a thank you while doing something for other children.”

Kodie, along with Jennifer Widmer are organizing a “Cancer Can Suck It BBQ” which will be held on Monday, April 23 at Sidney Street School from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. There will be raffles, barbecue, hotdogs, pop, bouncy castle and much more for families. Money raised from the event will go towards Childhood Cancer research.

Kodie has joined the “Mom Squad” through Childhood Cancer Canada. CCC Moms come from all across Canada but have one thing in common – childhood cancer. CCC Moms are dedicated to making a difference by shaving their heads and raising funds for life-saving childhood cancer research and clinical trials. They provide a sisterhood of support for all mothers who have lived, or are currently living, the cancer journey with their child.

Kodie is hoping to raise a minimum of $5000 for the Mom Squad. Kodie will be flying into Toronto on May 7th where she will meet with other CCC Moms and have her head shaved in honour of William and other children with cancer.

If you are unable to make the fundraising barbecue, you can make an online donation at http://support.childhoodcancer.ca/goto/Kodiefrancis or reach out to Kodie directly at 306-661-0938 or kodiefrancis81@hotmail.com
