| How many times have you heard your teenagers say they're bored? The Assembly of God Church is working to change that with the development of its youth drop-in centre. The church's youth group will be hosting an After Valentine's Banquet on Feb. 15 to raise money for equipment and activities at the centre. Located in the church basement, the youth drop-in centre was established last fall for the youth group's gatherings every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The welcoming atmosphere and cozy setup of couches offers youth a place to watch movies or play video games. It also includes a foosball table, air hockey table, pool table and ping-pong table. Because of the age and deterioration of the pool table and ping-pong table, the youth group is fundraising to purchase new ones. Funds raised from the banquet will support the cause, as well as assist in offsetting other costs for the operation of the youth group. "Some of it is for the equipment, but we always need money for other things like snacks or when we have events or go on trips," explained Pastor Paul Martens, youth pastor at the Assembly of God Church. He said the drop-in centre is a response to the great need for a place where youth can get together and have fun. "As a church, we want to reach out to the community, and we see that young people need somewhere to go and somewhere to be able to just be themselves and relax," Martens said. "We're providing something that the community doesn't have, but definitely needs." He noted the youth group is run by a team of committed volunteers who enjoy spending time with the youth. "There's a group of us that want to be involved and mentor them. We want to be able to show them that it's possible to have fun without drugs or alcohol being involved." The banquet will be held on Feb. 15 at 6 p.m., with members of the youth group assisting in preparing and serving the supper. Former Miss Rodeo Canada Christa Needham will be the guest speaker for the evening. Tickets are $10 per person, $15 per couple, $25 per family and children under 10 dine for free. They are available from members of the youth group or by calling Martens at 661-8991. Tax deductible donations may also be made the evening of the banquet. |
