By Marcia Love Maple Creek is entering its seventh week as a community in a state of emergency following the flood. Council resolved to extend the emergency status for another week in a meeting on July 29. While declared in a state of emergency, the town is able to receive assistance from the province in a more timely manner. “It’s a precautionary measure, so that if a situation arises that needs to be dealt with really quickly it can be,” explained Mark Caswell, town administrator. “The recommendation from the province is that we maintain it for a little while yet.” He said he believes all municipalities in the province that announced a state of emergency have not yet lifted it. “There’s lots of things that still need to be resolved, and this will allow council to make decisions in the aftermath,” Caswell said. |
