Cowgirls in the southwest will soon have the opportunity to celebrate their western roots.
Several Consul women are looking for enthusiastic cowgirls to kick start a chapter of the Cowgirl Cattle Company in Saskatchewan.
The first and only chapter of the group was established in Cochrane, Alta. in 2000 to commemorate women in the ranching and farming industry.
Because of the great distance many area cowgirls had to travel for the group’s annual Cowgirl Rendezvous and Roundup, co-founder Jill Richards and interested neighbours decided to organize a chapter in Consul.
“It’s for ladies who are involved in the cattle business or whose families are agriculture-based,” she explained. “There’s lots of cowgirls out here, and we would love to have any of them from across Saskatchewan join us.”
The first annual Cowgirl Roundup will be held on Oct. 2 in Consul and will feature cowgirl mercantile from local vendors, a silent auction and a catered supper.
Funds generated from the event will go towards the Maple Creek Hospital and Consul ambulance services.
“We’re inviting all cowgirls anywhere from 16 to 100 years old to come out, honour their heritage and have a wonderful evening out,” said Richards.
Women interested in joining the Cowgirl Cattle Company must have a registered brand in their family and a love of the land.  They are asked to sign up by Sept. 15.
For more information, contact Richards at 306-299-4411, Ann Behrman at 306-299-2028 or visit cowgirlcattlecompany.com.
