Council met with delegates from the Heritage Advisory Committee on Aug. 24 to discuss amendments to the Heritage District bylaw.
Councillor Barry Elderkin expressed his concerns with some of the duties of the committee stated in the bylaw.
Elderkin explained that he would like to see the committee’s chairperson and recorder appointed through the town administration, as the advisory group should be town-oriented.
Other changes to the bylaw were suggested, including council receiving minutes from the Heritage Advisory Committee’s meetings.
“To me, the committee is there for advice and not for specific tasks assigned,” Elderkin explained. “Council is the body that would make the decision and not the committee.”
Council agreed to the amendments to the bylaw.
In other council news, it was learned the town received $4,148 in profits from recycling paper through Maple Creek & District Opportunities Inc. this year.
“This is really good news,” said Mark Caswell, town administrator.
The town did not see a profit last year, as the value of paper was much lower. This year’s profit was created through the provincial government’s Go Green Fund.
Council discussed the number of garbage receptacles throughout the town which are not considered acceptable for holding garbage containers.
Garbage collectors will be taking note of residences with improper garbage receptacles and informing the town. Notifications will be sent to these residents advising them of the updated receptacle requirements.
