By Angela Litke A fire in the early morning hours of Dec. 29 caused extensive damage to a Maple Creek residence. Josephine Volk, a self-professed night owl, had finished watching the late news and was getting ready for bed around 12:30 a.m. In the bathroom, the fan wouldn’t work, and it was unusually warm. As well there was an odour. Volk didn’t immediately identify the odour as smoke, but knew something was wrong so she phoned her son, Andrew, at Fox Valley. When Andrew arrived he saw smoke coming from the whirly bird on the roof and called 9-1-1. Fire Chief Keith Stork says the call came in at around 1:30 a.m. that there was fire at the house located at 107 Fifth Avenue. Stork says the fire started in the attic directly above the bathroom. Firemen had to tear down part of the ceiling of the main floor to get to the fire. It took firefighters about three hours to extinguish the blaze. “It never got out of hand, just where it was we couldn’t get at it,” Stork said. He said the upper level of the house is pretty much gutted. Although the cause of the fire has not yet been established, Stork suspects it was electrical. Volk said thankfully the furnace is still working so there is no fear of water pipes freezing. |
