DREVER – Greeba LeMurra Drever nee Creer – October 29, 1934 – November 11, 2017
The Family of Greeba Drever wishes to announce her passing on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the Swift Current Regional Hospital at the age of 83.
We invite you to join us for the Memorial Service at 2:00 pm, Friday, December 29th at the Maple Creek United Church, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.
Greeba LeMurra Drever was born in Port St. Mary, Isle of Man on the 29th of October, 1934 to Ross and Vera Creer. She grew up with two elder sisters, Hesba and Helen, and an older brother, Ross (Sonny).
She attended the Four Roads elementary school and finished her high school at Castle Rushen, Castletown.
Greeba was very active in sports, especially field hockey and badminton. After graduating high school, she attended Teacher’s college through the University of Liverpool, at Skarsbrick Hall, Manchester. She then taught lower grades at a school in Manchester before accepting a teaching position at Manville School which brought her across the Atlantic to Skull Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada. Greeba arrived in Tompkins, Sask in August of 1957 then travelled out to Bob and Dorothy Eccleston’s place on Skull Creek to board while she taught. There, she met Ralph Drever, a local farmer, and was engaged in October of that same year. Ralph and Greeba were married in Medicine Hat on July 19, 1958, after she had finished her school year. Daughter, Shelley was born the next July and son, Jay the next June; a few years later a second son, Glyn was born in July of 1964.
Her first few years of married life involved building a home with Ralph and the kids; growing a garden, cooking and baking, building a new house, learning to drive, all the while, becoming an active participant in her new country and the Skull Creek community.
Greeba became a member of Homemakers, was active in raising money for the new curling rink build, leader of the 4H Pinstickers club, and a member of the Nomads birthday club. Curling was not a sport Greeba grew up with but she took to it, instantly. Skipping local rinks, taking Ruthie Wagner, Mary Drever and Gladys Birchall to many bonspiels in and around the area. Even a final game in Eastend was broadcast on the Shaunavon radio.
Over the years, Greeba and Ralph kept active with the Rink, the Piapot Lions and with their granddaughters, Sydney and Julie, who would spend time with them on ‘Papa’s Farm’. There were lots of fond memories. After 43 years on the farm, Ralph and Greeba retired to Maple Creek, where they met new people and got reacquainted with some old friends. They enjoyed a couple of trips to see Glyn and family in the Seattle, Washington area, one with Jay not long after they moved to Maple Creek, and one with Shelley to Sydney’s High School Graduation. Plus, many trips to Medicine Hat, Swift Current and Regina, for shopping and medical appointments, with their daughter, Shelley.
In March 2015, Ralph passed away while they were both in the Shaunavon Long Term Care facility. Greeba stayed in Shaunavon until she was able to be moved back to the Cypress Lodge in Maple Creek. She moved over to the new LTC facility in August of 2015 and resided in the Prairie Oasis house until her passing. She enjoyed all visitors and her smile told you she recognized you. Greeba loved to sing and dance when possible, and loved to go to the Roundup Diner for French fries.
Her personality never diminished while so much did, and because of that, she will be missed by many who knew her, and came to know her.
Greeba is survived by her daughter, Shelley of Maple Creek, son, Jay of Regina, son Glyn, his wife, Louanne and daughters, Sydney and Julie, of Bonney Lake, Washington, her two sisters, Hesba Skelly and Helen Maddrell of Port St. Mary, Isle of Man, and three sisters-in-law, plus numerous nephews and nieces in Canada and the Isle of Man. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Ralph Drever, her mother and father, Ross and Vera Creer, her brother, Ross Creer, and an infant son.
Should you wish to make a donation in the Memory of Greeba Drever, please do so to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Binkley’s Funeral Service, Maple Creek and Leader. Condolences may be offered to the family at http://www.binkleysfuneralservice.com
