JOHNSTON - Leslie Robert Johnston ~ 1941- 2010 It is with broken hearts the family of Leslie Robert Johnston, beloved husband of Sharlene (Prentice) for 46 years, announce his peaceful passing at the age of 68 years. Three grandchildren, Krista, Erika, and Marshall, his brothers, Russell (Cecile), Ray (Margie) Johnston, Larry (Sandy) McLavish, sister, Kathleen (Ted) Olson, step-brother, Bill McLavish, aunt, Frankie Moore, mother-in-law, Gertrude Prentice, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Les was predeceased by infant son, Clinton, infant grandson Phillip, his father, Robert Johnston, mother, Mae McLavish, brother Lloyd, step-father Bill McLavish, father-in-law, Oliver Prentice, and step-sister, Phyllis Murray. Les was born August 25, 1941 and raised in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. On Sept. 14, 1963, he married Sharlene Prentice. They lived in Gull Lake and Tompkins, then in 1966, Les and his family moved to Medicine Hat. There Les became Meat Manager at Taylor's IGA, Southview IGA, and Medicine Hat Co-op, where his meat-cutting career spanned more than forty years. Les loved people and enjoyed working with the customers and staff in the retail business. Les fought a ten year battle of medical problems starting with cancer and ending with A.L.S. Les was a gentle, caring and loving man, who never complained and always had a smile and a good sense of humor. Over the years, Les was involved with most sports, both coaching and playing, art lessons both in oil painting and sketching, and crib and pool leagues. During his lifetime, Les was also a member of the Kinsmen and K-40 clubs, Masons, Shrine and Fifth Avenue Memorial Church Board. Les loved to start his day having coffee at A&W with his buddies. But most important to Les was his family, and he loved to watch his children and grandchildren in whatever they did. A celebration of Les' life will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. James Farrell officiating. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the A.L.S Society, Suite 400, 320 - 23 Ave. S.W. Calgary, Alberta T2S 0J2. |
