The Maple Creek Senior Hawks hockey club is taking a leave of absence from the 2011-12 hockey season. "We had a meeting there on Monday night at the rink, and the players that were there are prepared to play rec hockey this year," said Senior Hawks manager John Duncan.
A lack of registered players for the season contributed to the decision to take a year leave. Some players on last year's roster have other hockey commitments or are too busy working to play hockey this winter. According to Duncan, to fill the roster the team needed at least 16 players to register. "We have to have at least 10 players on the ice to start a game," he said. "We had about 10 players, we were five or six short." The Senior Hawks play in the White Mud Hockey League. Their season typically runs from November to mid March. The team plays in the North Division of the league along with the Cabri Bulldogs, Leader Flyers, and Gull Lake Greyhounds. Though there won't be league games, the hockey club still plans to hold their annual Boxing Day dance, fun tournament and beer and wings fundraiser. The annual beer and wings night is typically held mid-January. The fun tournament is a recreational hockey tournament hosted by the Senior Hawks. The tournament will take place on Dec. 26 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The events will help raise funds for operating expenses like registering the team with the Saskatchewan Hockey Association, league dues and player insurance for next year. Last year proceeds from the beer and wings night went to supporting the Maple Creek Walking Trail. In the past, proceeds have gone to the hospital fund. |
