By Paul Grigaitis The Cypress Cyclones earned their first win in five games played against Fort Knox this season during an away game on Friday night. The Cyclones returned home with a 3-1 win in the only game they played of three scheduled on the weekend. A home game against Ochapowace on Saturday night and a Sunday afternoon game in Delisle were both cancelled because of the weather. The Cyclones lost to Fort Knox in four previous games this season including a shootout loss suffered in late November. But on Friday night, Cyclones head coach Blaine Stork said his team put forward one of their best efforts of the season. “We just played a really defensive game – a smart, defensive game,” Stork said. Brett Talaga scored the first goal in the win for the Cyclones while Clay Cooke followed with a goal in each the first and second periods. Cyclones goaltender Jesse Unrath, who stopped 46 out of 47 shots on goal, deserves some credit, Stork added. The win moves the Cyclones just ahead of Ochapowace in the Prairie Junior Hockey League’s South Division standings. Before Friday night, both teams were even with seven wins, 21 losses and five overtime losses in 33 games played. The teams were to meet at the Community Arena on Saturday night, but Stork wasn’t disappointed the game was cancelled following a long trip home from Fort Qu’Appelle after Friday night’s game. “Because of the weather we were really late getting back. Guys weren’t in bed probably until 5:30 or 6 o’clock in the morning.” The Cyclones would have been ready to play on Sunday, Stork continued, but the weather didn’t co-operate. Stork said he is happy to earn a win this weekend which closes the gap between the Cyclones and the Assiniboia Southern Rebels in the South Division standings. After 33 games played, the Southern Rebels have 13 wins, 19 losses and one overtime loss. They sit six points ahead the Cyclones. Stork said he expects his team to be extra motivated when the Southern Rebels come to Maple Creek for two games at the Community Arena this coming weekend. The Cyclones and the Southern Rebels meet at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. |
