Minor sports in Maple Creek are in danger of becoming obsolete if community members don't get involved. "We really need to get some board members, some volunteers," said Sean Chapman, a member of Maple Creek's Minor Sports Association.
A Minor Sports Association meeting held at the Maple Creek Community Arena on Jan. 16 revealed three board members will be stepping down at the 2012 annual general meeting in April. The meeting, which lasted for about an hour, was used primarily to review organization and procedures for the current sports season. Board members reviewed a treasurer’s report, which projected a slight deficit this year. Board members also discussed the possibility of calling players up from lower divisions, ice time and tentative dates for the AGM. Overall the season is going well, but soon the 131 children who participate in minor sports may be out of luck. There were about 10 participants at Monday night's meeting, but there are only five people who regularly attend board meetings. "There's not enough help," said Chapman. "The same people are on every board because nobody else likes to do anything. That's the reason why service clubs go out of business and organizations are down." "There's three or four of us on the board that are stepping down, so there needs to be people that are stepping up if they want to keep our minor sports," said Chapman. Each spring the minor sports association holds its annual general meeting, usually at the Maple Creek Community Arena. The 2012 annual general meeting will be held two weeks before spring registration. At that time the board executive for next season will be chosen. Two additional meetings are held – during spring for baseball and fall for hockey. There are no special requirements for volunteers who wish to join the minor sports board of directors. Participants do not need to have a child currently registered in sports to take part. "They just have to want to be involved, to keep the organization going," said Chapman. Chapman, who is also the president of the Cypress Cyclones Junior B Hockey Club, says many of the current minor sports directors are in a similar position. "We need to start thinking of people that can step in and do this because we've been at it for a lot of years and it's time for someone else to take over," he said. |
