The Cypress Cyclones came away with one win and two losses on the weekend.
The team hosted the Assiniboia Southern Rebels on Jan. 27, with the Rebels leaving with a 6-3 victory. Saturday night gave the Cyclones a 4-3 triumph when the Capitals came to town, but a game in Fort Qu'Appelle against Fort Knox on Sunday left the Cyclones with a 3-2 loss.
On Friday night, the Cyclones got an early lead, netting two goals in the first period. But the Rebels gained a goal late in the period and added three more goals in the second. Another goal for the Rebels was followed by one for the Cyclones, but Assiniboia scored one last time to end the game 6-3.
The Cyclones were more successful Saturday night, defeating the fourth-seeded Capitals.
Regina made the first goal halfway through the first period, but Tanner Doig knocked one in from Dallas McIntosh and Dylan Jackle with two minutes left, ending the period in a 1-1 tie.
Seven minutes into the second, Rylan McKinnon netted the team's second goal from Craig Fournier and Lane Sanderson. The Capitals scored five minutes later, but Fournier regained the Cyclones' lead on a play from Sanderson and McIntosh. The period ended with a 3-2 lead for the Cyclones.
The Capitals brought in another goal halfway through the third period. With seven minutes left in the game, Sanderson netted the winning goal for the Cyclones from Fournier and McKinnon to end the game 4-3.
Cyclones goalie Paul Bretton made 29 saves during the game and was glad to see the team work its way to a win on home ice.
"Today was a really good game," he said. "We had a hard battle, but we kept fighting all the way through."
The Cyclones couldn't keep up the momentum of the win the following night when they travelled to Fort Qu'Appelle to face Fort Knox.
Only one goal was scored in the first period, brought in by Fort Knox. The Cyclones made their first goal halfway through the second, but Fort Knox regained their ground six seconds later with a goal. The Cyclones finished the period with what would be their last goal. Fort Qu'Appelle ended the game in their favour with one goal in the third period to seal their 3-2 win.
Sitting with an 8-21-0 record with two over-time losses, the Cyclones with host the Pilot Butte Storm on Friday at 7:45 p.m. They will then host the Capitals on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
