By Marcia Love The Maple Creek Peewee Hawks will advance to the next round of playoffs after defeating the Shaunavon Badgers 6-1 at Shaunavon Feb. 12. The Badgers scored the first goal in the first period, followed by a point for the Hawks scored by Jayden Sunde, assisted by Brendan Kohls. In the second period, Kohls notched the second Hawks’ point on a play from Kage Hellman and Sunde. The third period saw three more goals for the Hawks. Hellman scored the team’s third goal, assisted by Tristen Sulz and Kohls. Kohls earned another goal, assisted by Sunde, followed by a second goal for Hellman with assistance from Kohls and Sulz. After three periods the score was 5-1 for Maple Creek, but since this was the second game in a two-game total-point series, and Shaunavon won the first with a score of 5-1, the game was forced into overtime. It was in the second overtime period that Sunde scored the final goal on a play from Nolan Jans. Coach Chris Kohls said the team played a much better game against the Badgers. “We came up in the second overtime because of a huge save by our goalie Nolan Jans,” he said. “It was a really good effort this time.” The Hawks will face off against the Strasbourg Maroons in the provincial south third round on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Maple Creek. |
