Two Saskatchewan natives who lived the prairie child’s dream of playing in the NHL will be joining the teams at the Maple Creek Community Arena for  the 4-on-4 Celebrity Hockey Tournament April 9 and 10. Lindsay Carson and Gord Sherven will be here to display the skill that took them into the pro ranks.
Lindsay Carson, born Nov. 21, 1960 from Oxbow, showed great ability in his left-wing position and was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft after a junior career in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades and the Billings Bighorns. After a season with the Saginaw Gears of the IHL, Carson made his NHL debut in 1981-82 and was on the roster full-time with the Flyers the following training camp, scoring 18 goals for the team. The following season saw a loss of play due to injuries, but Carson returned for the 1984-85 season improving his record to 20 goals. Carson played with the Flyers until he was traded to Hartford in January of 1988 and ended up in the minors a short time later before retiring in 1989.
Forward  Gord Sherven of Weyburn played only one season with his hometown Red Wings of the SJHL before being selected 197th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. On the road to his NHL career Sherven played with the University of North Dakota for the next two years, then with Team Canada at the 1983 World Junior Championships. It was during that year’s season that Sherven debuted with the Oilers for a brief, two-game shift. Sherven’s second season saw him traded to the Minnesota North Stars where he saw his first and only Stanley Cup playoff action.
Sherven ended up switching jerseys again in the 1985-86 season when he was sent back to the Oilers. He saw only minor league play after this and spent a lot of time with the Canadian National Team. The 1987-88 season was his last in the NHL and was also the year he played with Canada’s Olympic team at the Games in Calgary. Sherven then moved on to Europe where he played for several German squads to the end of his career.
