By Chris Jaster It took 50 years for Richmound to reclaim the Sask-Alta Baseball League championship, and the community is celebrating it in style.
Richmound will be holding a reunion the weekend of June 18 and 19 to honour the 1959 Rockets team and the 59-year history of the organization. “I thought this would be a good time to get some people back together and have a lot of memories and a lot of fun and that sort of thing in the name of baseball,” said Bill Gergely, who is organizing the event. People who have had any sort of connection to the Rockets — be it past or present players, managers, umpires or fans — are invited to watch the Rockets battle the Burstall Braves on June 18. The next day will be packed with a lunch at the ball diamond, an alumni baseball game, and then a dinner and dance. “We want people to come back and if it’s like a homecoming we want that too,” said Gergely. “We have all the records here and we went through the rosters here and we’ve made contact through e-mailing and phone calling. We’re hoping to have a good response to that weekend.” Gergely would love to see the size of the village double for the weekend and let people reminisce about the Rockets, which will be easier to do when the town hall is opened up to reveal archival material on the Rockets. The organizing committee even has the trophy the Rockets won back in 1959 and will have members of the ’59 team parade into the supper with their trophy. They will be followed by the 2009 championship team and their trophy. Anyone interested in celebrating the history of the only team that has played in every Sask-Alta Baseball League season since the league’s inception in 1951 may contact Bill or Debbie Gergely at 306-669-4735. The registration fee is $25. “The little town will come alive,” said Gergely.

Richmound fielded this men’s baseball team in 1985. The small southwest Saskatchewan community has had a team in the Sask-Alta League for 59 years. |
