Howard, Marye (nee Moodie)

Posted on November 6, 2013 by Maple Creek

HOWARD – Marye Howard (nee Moodie), age 90 years, of Eastend, Saskatchewan passed away at her home in Eastend on Tuesday, October 29, 2013.

Marye was born in the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on January 22, 1923 and would often joke that she was an Albertan at heart, but usually this was done in jest when Calgary was beating Saskatchewan in football. She grew up in a beautiful little valley on the ‘North bench’ and attended Star Butte, Black Hills and Klintonel country schools, and like any of the children of her age made the trip by horseback. She would often use the phrase that this made her “north country strong.”

Music was a huge part of her life, as her mother, Kathleen, played the piano at all the country dances requiring the piano to be lugged onto a sleigh or wagon by her dad Tib Moodie.

Following high school she attended nurses training in Medicine Hat, graduating in 1947, where she spent three lively years not only learning a profession, but having a great time attending the various activities associated with the wartime era.

Before coming back to Eastend, she worked in Maple Creek as director of nursing and “specialed” in hospitals in Calgary and Victoria. A brief stint as director of nursing in Eastend turned into a lifetime of nursing here as she rekindled a childhood friendship and teenage romance with Alec Howard, who was to become her husband of 51 years.

Together they had three children Alan, Renee (Maureen) and Susan. She has two grandchildren Stephen and Kathleen George and one great granddaughter Audrey.

Marye (also known as Sis) was the last surviving granddaughter of Major JD and Geraldine Moodie, a fact of which she was very proud. She had a love of dancing, music and was a voracious reader.

Anglican funeral services were held on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. from Eastend United Church in Eastend, with Reverend Jonathan Hoskin officiating. Wendy Kabrud presented the eulogy. Interment took place at Riverside Cemetery at Eastend. Binkley’s Funeral Service of Shaunavon (www.Binkleys.com) was in charge of the arrangements.
