MAPSTONE – Douglas “Doug” Roland Mapstone of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at the age of 88 years, beloved husband of the late Violet Mapstone.
He leaves to cherish his memory five children, Diane (Dean) Hirons, Floyd (Anita) Mapstone, Kirk (DeLea) Mapstone, Aaron Mapstone (Dean Stuart) and Marnie Mapstone; eight grandchildren, Marlo and Jody (Paige, Madison, Peyton); Mark and Tannis (Brayden, Brooke); Tanner and Angela (Clayton, Wyatt); Raina; Brady and Rhoda; Christopher; Mason and Mya (their mother Juanita); one brother Raymond (Laverne) Mapstone, one sister Dulcie Arndt, numerous nieces and nephews and his dear friend Olga Weiss and her family.
He was predeceased by his wife Violet on February 28, 2005; his parents Annie and Gilbert Mapstone; one son Phillip; four brothers, Gordon, Harry, Norman and Chester and one sister Beda.
Doug was born February 18, 1928, in Oxarat, Saskatchewan to Gilbert and Annie Mapstone.  As one of eight children he was kept busy on the farm helping with chores and tending to the animals.  As a young man he worked for many local farmers and threshing crews.  After purchasing some land, he met and married Violet Klatt. Their life was dedicated to farming and raising their children. The farm kept them close to home as they had to be around to milk the cow.  Doug became a very dedicated member of the Consul Elks Club until he sold the farm and moved to Medicine Hat in 1993. During his retirement in Medicine Hat he spent time as an avid bowler and taking care of his yard, always the greenest on the block. Spending time with his grandchildren was extremely important to him.  In 2005, he lost Violet to illness, and life changed.  With his family and close friends, he made it through this difficult time.  Over the past several years Olga Weiss has been a dear friend, who was with him and his family to the end.
The funeral service was held in the Pattison Chapel  on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 2 p.m. with Diaconal Minister Lila deWaal.   Interment followed in the Hillside Cemetery.
