PELKEY, Aubrey Glenn ~ 1932-2015
The family is sad to announce the passing of Aub, at the age of 82 on June 5, 2015 at the Edson Healthcare Centre, Edson, Alberta.
Aubrey, an only child, was born in Lanigan, Sask. The family moved to Minton, where his father Dwight Pelkey was one of the first station agents for the new railway line and his mom Dorothy Pelkey operated the coffee shop.
In 1957, Aubrey married Doreen Erickson in Midale, when he gained not only a wife but also 10 brothers and sisters-in-law. In the first few years of marriage Doreen and Aub lived in Regina, Estevan, Edmonton and finally settled in Fort St. John, B.C. the end of 1957.
As a young man, Aub encountered many adventures and turned his hand to several occupations.  Some of his most memorable experiences he talked about were the times spent custom combining from the Texas Panhandle to the Canadian vorder and working in the Maple Creek area surveying for oil in the early 1950s.  Aub was an entrepreneur at heart and tried a variety of careers and businesses – rig worker for Shell, Johnson Testers, Christensen Coring, construction on the WAC Bennett Dam, Hertz Car Rental, Koch Oilfield trucks and in 1974 he bought a grain farm a few miles northwest of Fort St. John. Then with his extensive oilfield background he finished the last 25 years of his career as an oilfield consultant.
In 2000, Aub and Doreen bought a beautiful retirement home in Sherwood Park, Alta.  They enjoyed meeting new friends and neighbors. Their biggest pleasure was spending time with the grandchildren Sam and Lauren.  In 2007, Aub and Doreen moved to the Palisades Condos where they remained until December 2013. Due to health issues in early 2014, Aub and Doreen ultimately moved to the Edson Healthcare Center.  Fortunately they were able to spend the last nine months of Aub’s life together.
Aubrey’s last day was spent on an outing to the Edson Fire Station for a pancake breakfast where he enjoyed visiting with the fire chief reminiscing about his days as a volunteer firefighter. Aub always had a knack for conversation and charm.
Aubrey is survived by his wife Doreen, children Craig (Julie) Pelkey, Robbie Pelkey, Renza (Dave Johnston) Pelkey, grandchildren Sam and Lauren Pelkey. Also left to mourn his loss are his in-laws Shirley (Ray) Boys, Jean (Morley) Jacobs, Kathy Erickson, Grace Lavergne, Joyce Bachiu, Ron (Jean) Erickson, Myrna (Nigel) Lilley, Neil (Wanda) Erickson, Jim (Cindy) Erickson; his niece LeAnn (Lee) Lansdell, their children Dylan and Shaylee Lansdell of Sherwood Park, his nephew Brad (Deb) Erickson of Toronto as well as many other nieces, nephews and friends.
He is predeceased by his Dad Dwight Pelkey, his step-father Charlie Johnson, and his mother Dorothy Johnson.
A memorial service and interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29 at Glenwood Funeral Home (52356 Range Road 232 Sherwood Park, AB).
Our family would like to thank his personal caregiver Sandy (she has become part of our family) and the staff at Edson Healthcare Centre for the excellent care and kindness during Aub’s stay.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to David Thompson Health Trust Central Block, c/o 3942 50A Ave, Red Deer, AB T4N 4E7.  It was their work which made it possible for Aubrey to spend his last months with his wife Doreen in Edson.
